Although caravan width is not as widely talked about as the caravan length and weight, it’s still important to know how wide your caravan is for logistical reasons.
The legal caravan width in Australia must not exceed 2.5m, including the rear bumper bar, wheel guards and awning. The average width of Australian caravans is 2.38m and can range from 2.05m, right up to 2.56m.
For a good cross-section of how wide caravans are on average, check out the comparison table below, which includes many of the well-known caravan manufacturers in Australia.

How to Measure Caravan Width

The easiest way to measure the width of your caravan is with a measuring tape.
To work out the width of a caravan, measure right across the body of the back of the van from the furtherest point on the left-hand-side, to the furtherest point on the right-hand side of the caravan.
Don’t forget to include the awning, rear bumper bar and wheel guards in this measurement – you might need a ladder and a second person to help!
Legal Caravan Width Australia
The maximum legal caravan width in Australia must not exceed 2.5m (2,500mm), which is the measurement across the body and includes the wheel guards, rear bumper bar and awning.
If you need to take into consideration any of the ‘does not include’ items below, the caravan width cannot exceed 2.55m with those items.

Why it’s Important to Know the Width of Your Caravan
Just like knowing your caravan’s length and weight, you should also be familiar with the width of your caravan for a few important reasons.
- Storage – how much space you will need to allocate for storing your caravan at home (or elsewhere)
- Parking – how much width you require as a minimum when parking the caravan at roadside stops and car parks
- Manoeuvring – helps to judge distances and spaces while driving and manoeuvring (particularly through narrow gates etc.)
