As the caravanning industry grows and evolves, many manufacturers are joining the aluminium frame bandwagon and foregoing the original timber frame construction.
Caravans with aluminium frames are lightweight and strong, however they are not impervious to metal fatigue down the track, which can result in welds and rivets weakening, potentially causing leaks. Those who take it easy with their van are less likely to have any structural issues with an aluminium frame caravan, while those who tend to go for more rough adventures have a higher chance of potential longterm cracks and loosening.
Bear in mind, that even caravans with aluminium frames will often have ply walls and timber in other sections of the caravan construction. When it comes to fixing sections that incur wood rot, timber frames are actually easier to cut out and replace than caravans with aluminium frames.

All of their other caravans are constructed using Meranti timber framing.

Lightweight aluminium frames are becoming more important, especially with off-road caravans where every extra kilo makes such a huge impact.

Trackvan are a completely timber-free construction with a welded box section aluminium frame, aluminium internal wall lining and ceiling, plus 4mm Ali comp exterior cladding.
Urban Caravans
All Urban Caravans are built around an aluminium frame, suitable for both on-road and off-road use. The frame is TIG welded and lock bolted for extra strength. A z channel is used on the chassis to allow for the aluminium frame to be bolted to the side of it.
