Gumma Reserve is one of those camping grounds where we came for a few days, but still found ourselves here three weeks later! What can I say, this primitive camp site pretty well offers everything a traveller could need and is situated in a beautiful location.

You’ll find Gumma Reserve about 5.7km east of Macksville in the Nambucca region. The last section of the road leading into the Gumma Reserve campground is unsealed. It’s easily accessible with a 2wd vehicle, but can be affected by heavy rain and localised flooding.

Gumma Reserve Prices

Finding good, lower cost camps down the New South Wales coast can be tricky, but we reckon Gumma Reserve is fantastic. The prices are reasonable and cheaper than staying in a Caravan Park if you’re looking to reduce your accommodation costs.

A person will come around late each afternoon to collect your ‘rent.’
*Make sure you’ve got cash – NO Eftpos.

Things To Do Near Macksville

The Pub With No Beer

The Pub With No Beer, Taylors Arm NSW

The iconic Pub With No Beer is located in Taylors Arm, about 27km out of Macksville, NSW.

The story goes that years ago this little pub couldn’t get any beer deliveries through (possibly due to flood, but I can’t confirm that info).

So, the publican decided to only serve the remaining beer to himself and his mates.

Well the locals weren’t too pleased with that, so they headed to a nearby Aboriginal camp, where the people happily shared their home brew.

It’s in this very pub that Gordon Parsons apparently wrote the song ‘The Pub With No Beer,’ which later became famous through Slim Dusty and even Midnight Oil.

The pub actually started it’s life as the Cosmopolitan Hotel in 1903, but these days it goes by the iconic name of The Pub With No Beer.

Nambucca Heads

Nambucca Heads, NSW

Just 14km north of Macksville is the larger town of Nambucca Heads. It’s a lovely coastal region with picturesque lookouts, quiet beaches and an understated main street.

Some highlights in Nambucca Heads include the painted V Wall and the Mosaic Wall in town. Shelley Beach is a beautiful swimming spot, but it’s not always patrolled. You can also go for a drive around and enjoy the coastal views from high lookout vantage points.

  1. The Pub with No Beer is such a catchy name and I would think there was actually no beer if I didn’t know the story behind it 🙂 This campsite is very reasonably priced and the facilities look very clean. Painting on rocks sounds like fun too!

  2. I’m always looking for affordable camping sites/campgrounds. We camp whenever we do nature/National Park trips because it’s so peaceful (and saves money 😉 ) I’ll add this one to my list for when we are in that area. The river looks INCREDIBLE it’s so blue.

  3. Ahh you went to the pub with no beer!! We camped there when we were road tripping, the owners are so lovely. And yes, the beer shortage was because of severe weather making the town inaccessible. The memorabilia on the wall is fascinating too, isn’t it!

    1. Oh true. The camp across the road was so beautiful, looking up to the mountains. I thought I’d read something about a severe weather event, so thanks for clarifying. There was so much on display to look at, it was a cool pub.
