Guthalungra is a small town in the Whitsunday region with a fantastic Rest Area camping spot right on the Bruce Highway. You can find it situated about 47km North of Bowen and 68km South of Ayr in the Mid Tropics region of Queensland.
Given that there is basically no Free Camping permitted within the Whitsundays region, this rest area helps to break up the journey up and down the coast.
Guthalungra Rest Area offers flushing toilets, rubbish bins, covered picnic tables and a safe place for travellers to pull over for the night.

How we Ended up at Guthalungra Rest Area
Guthalungra Rest Area is not a bad little stopover. We were lucky that a fair bit of rain has just been through, which means the grounds were really beautiful and green, but I don’t think that’s always the case.
Our first day back on the road after being stopped in Townsville for 3 months didn’t go totally as planned. We initially arrived at the small town of Giru, south of Townsville, to check out the Free Camp. We just weren’t feeling it though and wanted to make it a bit further than 55km down the road!
So, we made our way a little further south to the next two Free Camps that we’d picked out. ‘Funny Dunny’ and ‘Wunjunga’ were both beach-side camps that looked great on WikiCamps. However, the only road leading into both of those camps was CLOSED due to flooding! Rule Number 1 – never make plans!
By this stage, we were having a good old laugh. What was Plan C? Guthalungra Rest Area… and it turned out to be great!
