Motorhomes Australia FAQs

Motorhome Types in Australia
In the US they use the A, B and C class system for rating their motorhomes.
In Australia we generally slot them into the following categories:
- 4WD Campervan
- Campervan
- Motorhome
- Bus or Big Rig
What’s the difference between an RV and a Motorhome?
The term RV stands for Recreational Vehicle, which essentially covers all leisure vehicles that can be lived/ camped in, plus driven. Therefore, RV is the overarching name for campervans and motorhomes.
In Australia, the term RV can also extend to encompass caravans, camper trailers and hybrids.
What’s the difference between a Campervan and a Motorhome?
- Motorhome – Built on a truck or bus chassis with in-built, self-contained living. Generally there will be a queen bed (sometimes bunks), kitchen, ensuite and dinette seating.
- Campervan – A van that has been converted into mini motorhome for self-contained travel. There will be much more basic facilities including a bed, seating and a little kitchen.
Where can you park a Motorhome in Australia?
A motorhome can be parked anywhere along the street and in public parking lots around Australia, just like regular cars (as long as there’s enough room). However, you can’t just pull up anywhere and sleep for the night. In fact, many car parks will have a curfew, just to reinforce that no camping or sleeping is allowed.
Can you sleep in a Motorhome anywhere in Australia?
It’s generally illegal to sleep along the street, in parking lots and anywhere with a ‘No Camping’ sign in Australia.
Here’s where you can sleep in your motorhome:
- Free Camps
- Rest Stops
- Low Cost Camps & Showgrounds
- Caravan Parks
- Private Property
Can you sleep in a Motorhome while it’s driving?
No, you cannot have any passengers sleeping in the motorhome beds while driving. All passengers must be wearing seatbelts and smaller children must be in child seats while moving, just like any other vehicle.
Can you walk around in a Motorhome while driving?
As every passenger must be seated and wearing a seatbelt while the vehicle is moving, you also cannot walk around the motorhome while in transit. It’s actually against the law, so you could even be fined for doing so.
Do Motorhomes have to stop at weigh stations in Australia?
Most motorhomes in Australia do not exceed the Light Rigid (4.5 – 8 tonnes) or Medium Rigid (over 8 tonne) weights and therefore do not need to stop in at weigh stations.
However, if you’re approaching weigh station in a motorhome that is over 4.5 tonnes, you may have to stop (location dependent). In addition, if the weigh station is open and your motorhome exceeds 8 tonnes, then you will definitely need to stop.
According to Roads and Maritime Services…
“All heavy vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 8 tonnes are required to enter Heavy Vehicle Safety Stations (except for a few that are 4.5 tonnes).”
Do you need a special licence to drive a Motorhome in Australia?
If you’ve got an Australian driver’s licence, you can drive a motorhome in Australia.
Australian Drivers:
- Must have full open drivers licence
- Have at least 12 months driving experience
- Can’t be on learners, provisionals or probationary licences
International Drivers:
- Can use overseas licence to hire & drive a motorhome in Australia
- Must be an unrestricted licence (hasn’t been cancelled or revoked)
What is the biggest Motorhome you can drive on a car licence in Australia?
An open car licence in Australia allows you to drive any motorhome up to 4.5 tonnes (which is most of them).
Licence limits:
- Car Licence – vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes (GVM)
- Light Rigid (LR) – vehicle with GVM 4.5 – 8 tonnes
- Medium Rigid (MR) – GVM over 8 tonnes and no more than 2 axles

What Motorhomes Are Made in Australia?
Below are the 18 Australian made motorhome manufacturers. Only the brands that use clear wording to support being Australian made have been included here. Some of the other companies listed in the motorhomes Australia directory above may in fact be Australian made, however unless they clearly state it, they haven’t been added.

To help with finding what motorhomes are made in Australia, look out for the ‘Australian Made’ logo. Since companies have to apply to be able to use the logo, not all Aussie made motorhomes will be using it, however the green and gold kangaroo is definitely helpful.
Avan
