Let’s be honest, most people these days opt for the ‘bigger is better’ philosophy when it comes to modern-day caravans. Obviously a Taj Mahal on wheels is going to offer the maximum amount of comfort and convenience – I get it.
However, there is actually another collection of people who sit at the other end of the spectrum. These are the folk who prefer a simpler set-up that weighs less, takes up less storage space and doesn’t need a V8 Landcruiser to tow the thing.
This is where “small,” “mini” and “micro” caravans Australia are becoming a thing.
Mini caravans range from $31,900 to $61,990 AUD, with the average price sitting at $40,934 AUD. Their body length (not including the A-frame) is generally between 10 – 13 ft, which converts to 3 – 4 metres long.
While there are no industry specifics (yet) for the small caravans category, here’s what I reckon constitutes a “micro caravan:”
- 13 foot and under
- Fixed internal bed
- Minimum 2 berth
- Full height (able to stand up inside)
- Solid roof & walls (no pop tops)

Crusader have two models in their mini caravan series. They are very similar, but if you’re looking for the off-road model, go for the Chameleon Liberty SV.
