Swansea Lakeside Holiday Park was a really fantastic base camp for us while we explored Newcastle, NSW. Unfortunately Newcastle is pretty well void of Free and Low Cost Camps, so we wanted to find a caravan park with nice facilities that wasn’t too far out of town.
Most of the things that we wanted to explore were right in the city, which was a 28km drive (45 minutes).
The other caravan park that we did consider was Stockton Beach. Although that park is geographically closer to town, it’s still a 20km (28 minute) drive, as you need to go all the way around to get there.
The advantage with Swansea Lakeside Holiday Park for us was the facilities. A big pool for the kids, playground, mini golf, games room and more.
If you’re continuing south after visiting Newcastle and venturing on to Sydney, here are some great Sydney day trips to add to your list.

I really wanted to visit this place.
Swansea looks like a great place for kids. We haven’t done trailer camping with ours yet but I’d love to visit a place that has lots of activities for them, like Swansea.
Definitely a good spot to take the kids.
This seems like a great place, I hate it when you can’t really find cheap campsites but I suppose it’s to be expected around most cities. But when you have to pay a bit more it’s good to know you’re getting the facilities to match the price.
I know, we hate it too when we can’t find Low Cost Camps. But, when we do stay in a caravan park, we definitely like to make sure we’ve got all the bells and whistles, since we’re paying more for it.
Swansea Lakeside Holiday Park seems like a great place to explore. The location of it is indeed ideal for a holiday.
I’ve been meant to go to Newcastle for such a long time… I’ve been living in Sydney for over 15 years so I have no excuse really… I like the location of this caravan park, very close to the water, perfect!
It’s always the way, we never check out our own backyard. You must get there, Newcastle is great!
Looks like a lovely family-friendly park! The facilities really make it shine .. so much to offer!
Lakeside Swansea was definitely a family-friendly one.
