After spending three months camping and working in Townsville, I got to know the local caravan parks and attractions fairly well.

Heading into Townsville from the north, we started out at Bluewater Park Rest Area, which is a fantastic 48-hour Free Camp about 30km north of the city.

Once it was clear that we would be stopping for work to help top up the travel funds, we hit the ground and did the rounds of all the caravan parks in Townsville. We had two days to find a base camp, which needed to be suitable for the kids and me as we’d be stuck at camp without a car during the week.

As it turns out, we spent six weeks at Discovery Parks Townsville, then another six weeks house-sitting and looking after four gorgeous dogs in Annandale, Townsville. If that’s something you might be interested in, here’s the full guide to house sitting as you travel.

Discovery Parks Townsville

We spent six enjoyable weeks camping at Discovery Holiday Parks Townsville. It was great to meet some other travellers and the kids had a ball swimming in the pool day and night.

The staff were all really great and made us feel at home. We found the grounds and amenities to be nice and clean with everything we needed on hand.

You can grab a meal in the Motel Restaurant next door, which you’ll find as you check in. Plus the guys at the servo will give you a discount on their Cafe menu and fuel when you mention that you’re camping at the Townsville Discovery Park.

Discovery Parks Townsville offers both powered and unpowered sites, with some ensuite sites available. Dogs are welcome and all amenities are wheelchair accessible.

BIG 4 Tasman Holiday Parks – Rowes Bay

The BIG 4 Tasman Holiday Parks Rowes Bay has the BEST location out of all the Townsville caravan parks! Right across the road from the park is the beach with unobstructed views directly over to Magnetic Island.

Just 3.3 kilometres up the road is The Strand, popular for its free water park, swimming area, patrolled beach, iconic fishing jetty, plus cafes and restaurants.

BIG 4 Tasman Holiday Parks Rowes Bay also offers a variety of entertainment for kids, making it one of the top family Townsville caravan parks. With basketball and tennis courts, a giant chess board, swimming pool, lending library and kids activities, you hopefully won’t have to hear the words, “I’m bored!”

BIG 4 Ingenia Holidays Townsville

BIG 4 Ingenia Holiday Park is the BEST of the Townsville caravans parks for families when it comes to activities and facilities. It has all the bells and whistles, which is perfect for those who are looking for a resort-style camping experience.

With a huge pool, water park, 18-hole mini golf course, playground, trikes, beach volleyball and a licenced poolside bar, you won’t even need to leave the park!

This caravan park is in a handy location on the northern side of Townsville along the Bruce Highway about 18km from the CBD.

Tasman Holiday Parks – Rollingstone

The Rollingstone Tasman Holiday Parks caravan park is situated 62 km north of Townsville and offers resort-style beachfront camping.

With a cocktail bar, live music, barramundi catch & release lakes, a swimming pool with a waterfall cave and slide, a BMX track, wood-fired pizzas, pancake brekkies and more, you can fully unwind and enjoy yourself.

Exploring Townsville is an easy 55-minute drive down the Bruce Highway. Or, enjoy the park and take a wander up to Paluma Range National Park to see Crystal Creek, the natural rock slide and the iconic bridge.

GENERAL Townsville Caravan Parks

BIG 4 Townsville Gateway Holiday Park

Just 9 kilometres away from the city centre is the BIG 4 Townsville Gateway Holiday Park. With space for the kids to run around, a TV and movie room, plus two pools, families can set up and relax.

Dogs are welcome and all set-ups can book in, from tent campers to those with Big Rigs over 10 metres long.

Townsville Lakes Holiday Park

If relaxing lakeside camping is what you’re looking for, then Townsville Lakes Holiday Park is your pick of the bunch. With ensuite sites right by the lake, you can set up, pull out your camp chair and spend your afternoons by the water.

Townsville Lakes Holiday Park seems to be more popular with the grey nomad travellers, however, families are also welcome. There is a nice pool for cooling down and dogs are allowed at this park.

Coral Coast Tourist Park

Coral Coast Tourist Park is a lovely green park, offering beautiful shady sites, which are very much welcome in the Townsville heat.

With a nice pool and a TV room with Foxtel, the kids will be entertained. The Kiosk is convenient for grabbing snacks, ice and refilling the gas bottles without having to leave the park.

As this park is a little smaller, it’s not Big Rig friendly, but you’re welcome to bring your dogs along.

Coconut Glen Van Park

Coconut Glen Van Park is an older caravan park with permanent residents onsite. It also sits right behind the highway and train line with a Caltex truck stop next door, which can make it a noisy park at times.

However, Coconut Glen Van Park is one of the cheaper caravan parks in Townsville, starting at $26 per night for an unpowered site. The reviews on WikiCamps for this park are mixed, so have a read and make up your own mind.

Town & Country Caravan Park

Town & Country is one of the cheapest of the Townsville caravan parks, starting at just $35 per night for a powered site. However, before you jump in and book, be sure to read the reviews on WikiCamps as they’re mostly negative.

My own personal experience isn’t overwhelmingly positive either. I popped in to look around and get a price when I was in Townsville. The lady wasn’t overly friendly and I almost got the impression that she didn’t want us to stay. Go figure. The caravan park is right next to the Showgrounds and seemed to be filled with permanents in old caravans. I decided to move on to the next one.

Bluewater Caravan Park

Bluewater Caravan Park is located 30 minutes north of Townsville and offers the benefit of very large sites, surrounded by nature, which is not as easy to find in town.

You’ll find a well-appointed camp kitchen, including a full-sized fridge/freezer, two cooktops, microwave, kitchen sink, toaster and kettle. The campfire creates a welcoming space to have a yarn with friends, old and new.

Guests are welcome to stay at Bluewater Caravan Park for as long as they like and make full use of the pool and spacious surroundings.

Townsville Eco Resort

Townsville Eco Resort is unique in that they treat all of the wastewater on-site, which is then disbursed into their constructed wetland. The wetland is its own ecosystem, providing habitat for many local species and acting as a natural filtration system, ensuring that the run-off going into the Great Barrier Reef is as clean as possible.

Guests at Townsville Eco Resort can enjoy beautiful surroundings, a 24/7 adults-only pool and a freshly renovated camp kitchen with a flat-screen TV to watch games and events. There is also a Bar and Cafe, which overlooks the wetlands with Breakfast & BBQ packs, plus lunch and dinner menus.

Crystal Creek Caravan Park

The Crystal Creek Caravan Park sits 1 hour north of Townsville at the bottom of the Paluma Range National Park. Providing guests with tropical grounds, a swimming pool and toddler pool, plus a poolside undercover BBQ area, relaxing is made easy.

The Wet Tropics World Heritage Paluma Range National Park is a beautiful scenic drive, which starts just 750m away from the caravan park. Take the Barrett Road exit off the Bruce Highway to discover Crystal Water Swimming Hole, the Historic Bridge, plus Big Crystal Creek and Little Crystal Creek.

BACKPACKER Townsville Caravan Parks

Selina Magnetic Island

Selina’s on Magnetic Island is more of a traveller’s retreat than one of the usual Townsville caravan parks. Having an onsite bar/ cafe, a yoga verandah and a CoWork room with high-speed internet and desks makes this accommodation popular with backpackers and digital nomads.

Tents, camper trailers, caravans and RVs are allowed, but getting to Selina’s is a 40-minute ferry ride. If you’re taking a trailer onto the ferry, be prepared to pay upwards of $300. Check out the Magnetic Island Ferry prices to cost up your trip.

Townsville Tourist & Lifestyle Village

Townsville Tourist & Lifestyle Village offers travellers who are over 50 a relaxing place to stay. With pull-through bays, a dog off-leash park and two swimming pools (one heated) you can sure to unwind in peace.

Black River Stadium Over 50’s Tourist Park

For a friendly and inclusive grey nomad caravan park in Townsville, check out the Black River Stadium Over 50’s Tourist Park. Offering large, spacious sites, which are surrounded by a security fence and coded front gate for safety.

During June, July and August, visitors can enjoy $5 meals on a Wednesday night, whipped up by the long-term park members in the camp kitchen.

Pet owners are welcome to enjoy the Doggy Happy Hour in the fenced pet area at 4.30 pm daily.
